News Announcement: flickr deletes 3.5 years of altamira archives

Hello dear readers...

In case you've been wondering about an inability to access the archives in my site, flickr appears to have deleted my account without a prior warning that they were going to delete my account. Granted, they sent me an email that indicates that I was in violation of their Terms Of Service, but nowhere in the original statement is there a fair warning that my entire account would be deleted. Beneath is a copy of the email that was sent to me, in it's entirety.

I am presently doing my best to get the issue rectified with the proper authorities at flickr by following proper flickr procedures, and sadly all I can do at this point is wait. It seems reasonable considering that it's now fashion month, that I would share with you this current challenge.

Nevertheless, the "show must go on" and you can firmly count on additional fresh updates from Milan and Paris fashion weeks.

Sincerely,

Craig

"Hi altamiranyc,

You are in violation of our Guidelines found here:
http://www.flickr.com/guidelines.gne. Please reference
your
blog: www.altamiranyc.blogspot.com.

# Do link back to Flickr when you post your Flickr content
elsewhere.
Flickr makes it possible to post content hosted on Flickr
to other web sites. However, pages on other web sites that
display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link
from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr. This
provides a way to get more information about the content
and
the photographer.

Flickr is not a hosting site. Please rectify this use in
the future.

Regards,
Flickr Staff"

That's awful.

Moral of the story, don't use flickr!

Craig I'm so sorry. What exactly did you do wrong because I use FlickrPro to host my images...

I am so sorry to hear this. I have a Flickr account too (mostly non-fashion/style), and I'd be heartbroken if this happened. Flickr does seem to do this every now and then "by accident" and without warning. Do update on the situation once you know more.

That's an utter bugger Craig. I hope you manage to get the pictures back in some way, shape or form.

Thats terrible! I never realised you had to 'link back to flickr'....if they make it possible to use as hosting site then why is it against their guidelines? Their fault I say!

liza said...

Oh no! I hope you manage to get your photos back, it was pretty rough of them to give you no warning whatsoever!

That's really shocking. Thanks for sharing. I'd be broken about losing that from Flickr. I'm not sure I understand how you 'violated' their guidelines, either.

I thought it was my website browser problem. What a pity……Hope your photos coming back soon!

Grrrrrr...Flickr!

What opportunistic timing they have, taking your pics away during Fashion Week season. I love your photos, hope everything gets sorted out.

I was wondering what was going on these past few days! Was your entire catalog of photographs stored with Flickr? I am really sorry this happened to you. Hope that you are able to work it out. Are there other sites that you can use to store your photographs?

Haha - Bureaucracy strikes on the internet. That really is very unfair of them to do that with no warning! Who new that Flickr was run by the gestapo?!

OMG Craig, are you serious? That's really unfair. I use Flickr to host my photos too...hope it doesn't happen to me?

Great to see you again at LFW, see you again.

It is so, SO ridiculous to me that flickr keeps trying to dig its heels in about this whole "not being a hosting site" issue. HELLO, if I couldn't use flickr as a hosting site I sure as HELL would not pay them $25 a year to use their services (yes they have free accounts, but I have more than 200 photos, like the majority of users...) Give me a frickin' break, ugh.

Boo. I honestly hate Flickr. They told me I couldn't make a company page because it would be advertising. I told them I wanted a community not a product place they still argued. Then I told them I was trying to do what Modcloth does without the clothing and they shut up. I don't get it though how is flickr not a hosting site? They must really like to get traffic back there and are mad you weren't linking to them every 5 seconds.

Oh Craig this is the first I've seen of this - unbelievable. Like Michelle said, if this happened to me I'd be heartbroken (for what it's worth: I happened to start with PhotoBucket and really recommend them, never had a problem - yet).

My heart goes out to you and ANYTHING I can do to help support you getting this back, petition, whatever, I'm 100% behind you.

Like the professional that you are I hope you're enjoying Milan and Paris - sorry I didn't see you in London. Big virtual hug Craig.

Flickr is going to regret this. I cannot believe they actually had the nerve to commit this crime; without consent or prior notice is absolutely horrid of them. To say the least, we all know how merciless and tragic some may be.

I have a large collection of your photographs that I have saved for my own personal inspiration. The photos I have are from last year, and perhaps some from the year before the last. If you would like me to send you these files, I will be glad to send them to you upon request!

This is just another sorry example that demonstrates the power of jealousy, in the most interesting sense...

It's "...in its entirety."

i dunno, it seems like flickr did a dick move, but you did..sort of, really , totally violate their policy.

linking back to flickr sucks, so i rarely link back, but if you're flickr acct was private and you linked back, peopel wouldn't be able to see the link back page (i've noticed a lot of "big" bloggers do it that way.

i like flickr because it has an easy to navigate & upload system. i'd say fu flickr, but it really was your fault.

Anonymous said...

i cant believe this. We will help you do anything possible to get those photos back up and running.

Love much,

xx

Ps. Your blog is my favourite website. #1

Do you think you will be getting the photos back? Or have they deleted your account indefinitely? I really want to see the rest of the pictures :(

Is there anything we can do?
